Papua New Guinea Bilum Bag – Fringed, Highlands Region (c. 1960s

A$180.00

A striking vintage bilum (string bag) from Papua New Guinea, featuring bold red, natural and green striping with expressive hand-tied fringe.

This piece is handmade using the traditional looping (huri) technique, a knotless netting method unique to bilum making. It is not woven or crocheted, but constructed from continuous loops of fibre, creating a soft yet durable textile.

The elongated strap is designed for traditional head-carry use, where the bag rests against the back—an iconic form still used throughout the Highlands today.

Collected during a medical expedition in Papua New Guinea, circa 1969 (as per auction record), this example reflects both everyday utility and strong visual identity, with its textured fringe and rhythmic colour bands.
